Heliand Consort

Saturday, April 18th at 7:30pm

The Heliand Consort is a dynamic group of virtuoso musicians who perform engaging classical music, from the baroque era through 20 th century and contemporary repertoire. While the core ensemble consists of musicians on flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano, each season they appear in a variety of configurations often with guest artists.

The artists performing at Brandon Music include: Elisabeth LeBlanc, clarinet, Katie Oprea, oboe, and guest artists Sofia Hirsch, violin, Elizabeth Reid, viola and John Dunlop, cello. This concert marks Heliand Consort's first collaboration with strings in a program celebrating Romantic and neo-Romantic composers, including Benjamin Britten and Ottorino Respighi. Also featured is the Oboe Quartet by one of Australia's luminaries, Padma Newsome, whose music has been performed by Heliand Consort on several occasions.

Heliand Consort's music is best described as spirited classical music. Jim Lowe, writing in the Times Argus had this to say about a recent performance: “The Heliand Consort performance was substantial and musically rewarding. They played with great skill and musical understanding. These fine musicians achieved a Romantic grandeur normally reserved for strings and piano.” Heliand is an Old Saxon word for healing power and the Consort does just that for its audience by bringing joy through the power of music.

Elisabeth LeBlanc is a founding member of Heliand Consort. She earned performance degrees from the Juilliard School and McGill University. Recent solo performances include the world premiere of Don Jamison's Through the Clouds for clarinet, bassoon and strings with the Burlington Chamber Orchestra and multiple performances of Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings with Burlington Ensemble.

While living in Europe, Katie Oprea served as principal oboist with the Romanian State Opera of Timisoara and also appeared with the Timisoara Philharmonic, the Europa Symphony, and the Bolshoi Ballet. She is currently principal oboist with the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, and has performed in the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Burlington Ensemble, and the Vermont Mozart Festival.

Special guest Elizabeth Reid has played principal viola in the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Banff Opera Orchestra.  Locally, Reid has performed as principal violist of the Middlebury Opera Orchestra, as well as playing regularly with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Burlington Chamber Orchestra, ARIOSO, and the Northern Third Piano Quartet.

Cellist John Dunlop has been performing in the Northeast for over twenty-five years as Principal cellist with the Vermont Symphony, Burlington Chamber Orchestra, Opera North and the Green Mountain Opera Festival. He plays regularly on the Vermont Virtuosi series and the new TURN Music Project, a series of eclectic music by young and dynamic composers.

Sofia Hirsch , violinist, maintains a professional performance career as a guest with New York Chamber Soloists Orchestra and Handel Society of Hanover and Boston, as a member of Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Opera Company of Middlebury, a founding member of the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, and more recently, as the Co-Artistic Director of Burlington Ensemble.
