Monologues and Dialogues
This recording features the resonant and meditative sounds of the modern day low flutes. These unique instruments transverse down to deep dark tones and into the depths of low frequencies still unexplored by most woodwind instruments, especially flutes. The hyperbass flute alone plays lower than a concert piano, as the subcontrabass flute shares the same range as the orchestral string bass. The sonic relationships of musical sound and feeling create a purpose far beyond everyday entertainment, and may go as far as embodying healing powers for mind, body and soul.
Madelyn Byrne:In a Winter Landscape (bass flute and electronics ) Ross Edwards:Ulpirra(alto flute) Adrienne Albert:Three for Two(alto, bass and contrabass flutes) Gary Schocker:Dark Star(bass flute and piano) Hilary Taggart:Noisy Oyster(solos for alto, bass and contrabass) Vaughan McAlley:Serenade and Burlesque(2 c-flutes, alto, bass and contrabass) Stanley M. Argentine Cello
More than just Piazzolla, hear the tango as presented by 7 fantastic composers and performed by two of Australia's finest young musicians, Zoe Knighton (cello) and Amir Farid (piano). This CD has been the result of a joint love of Argentine music, a love of the tango and a love of playing together. We have so enjoyed this repertoire and each time we visit these pieces, we feel more attached to them. There are some threads running through our choice of repertoire - the first being an ongoing connection between Europe (specifically Italy) and Argentina. Vincenzo Piazzolla (Astor's father) is quoted by his son as saying that all the best tango composers come from South Italy. We also follow a geographical thread with the region in Argentina known as the Pampas. Quite often, specific places give rise to a wealth of inspiration and it seems this region has done just that.

This CD focusses on music written by Czech and Romanian composers between the 1930s and 2008, including Otmar Mácha, Alfred Mendelsohn, Tiberiu Olah, and Bohuslav Martinu. MAGNIFICAT - Music for Organ
Douglas Lawrence plays a magnificent recital on this his second recording on the organ he designed, the impressive 4 manual Rieger organ in The Scots' Church Melbourne. Works include, Bach, Mendelssohn, Alain and much much more!

The Song of Mary "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour" (Gospel of Luke 1:46-55) has inspired composers through the ages. This disc begins with the Fuga sopra il Magnificat by JS Bach and also holds movements from two Magnificat Suites by Michel Corette. The title also reflects the magnificence of the Rieger organ in the Scots' Church, Melbourne. The disc explores some of the wonderful, intensely musical sounds of this great instrument. Installed in Scots' in the year 2000, it has drawn outspoken praise from many of the world's most eminent organists. The listener will hear the distinct registrations used for German and French music. This is most clearly demonstrated in the earlier works where the German repertoire is based on the Organo Pleno - a sound based on the mixtures of the organ, whilst the French repertoire is founded on the sound of the reeds (trumpet, clairon, cromorne, voix humaine). The music covers a period of 300 years from Dietrich Buxtehude who was born in 1637 to Jehan Alain who died in 1940.

48 Fugues for Frank
A musical homage to the life and work of Frank Zappa, composed and performed by Michael Kieran Harvey, and complemented by Lingua Franka - concrete poetry by Arjun von Caemmerer, 48 Fugues for Frank premiered in 2010. A labor of love for Zappaphiles and anyone else with an interest in advanced music, innovative poetry and artistic vision. Each of the ten pieces uses four or five ideas inspired by, reacting to, or developing some of Zappa's signature techniques. Harvey says:

"Frank Zappa was a great man. Through his lyrics he skewered hypocrisy whether religious, social, artistic or corporate. During the '80s he took on the American religious right and the government of Ronnie Ray-gun, testified to the US congress including Tipper and Al Gore on the issue of rock censorship and blasted the hypocrisy of Baptist preachers such as Swaggart, at the same time winning Grammy awards for albums with titles such as Jazz From Hell. He was a personal friend of democracy heroes like Vaclav Havel (who also had the courage to confront the other major censoring religion of Communism). At the time of his death in 1993 Zappa was working on an ambitious project called Civilization Phaze III which used Dada and concrete poetry techniques to evoke a world not so much post-apocalyptic as post-human toilet.

"A perennial thorn in the side of the establishment, he stood up for humanism and rationalism, and his music reflects both extreme rigour and freedom. No teenager would ever consider self harm after listening to Zappa's Suicide Chump just as any remotely religious leaning thinking person would hang their head in shame after listening to his rap, the first on vinyl, Dumb all Over."
tracks (with obscure references to Zappa):
1. Greggary Peccary, Pentagon Afternoon
2. The Girl in the Magnesium Dress
3. Jazz from Hell
4. Tink runs Amok
5. Civilization Phase III
6. G-spot Tornado
7. St. Etienne
8. Ruth is Sleeping

Mendelssohn Cello
Mendelssohn is often regarded as a composer who lived a charmed life and therefore whose compositions lack a certain integrity or depth of expression. The gloriousness of his music, its likeability and his creativity in celebrating humanity are certainly primary reasons for his music's longevity. Felix Mendelssohn came from a wealthy family and one that supported Felix's and indeed, his sister Fanny's creative endeavours. These two are perhaps the most famous sibling team in Western classical music. Should one have to endure hardship in order to discover one's inventive and expressive potential? It is easy to forget that Felix died at the extremely tender age of 38 and having just outlived Mozart and Schubert, he certainly deserves his place in the musical hall of fame. (Indeed, his wedding march from 'A Midsummer's Night's Dream' will forever place him in that hall of fame as many a bride has walked down the aisle to those fateful bars.) As with all premature deaths, the question remains - "What if?" His cello works are largely inspired by his brother, Paul, who was an amateur cellist. Imagine the family get togethers with such siblings! One can only be jealous of the flies on those walls.
CD contents:
Sonata for Cello and Piano no. 1 in B flat major, Op. 45
Sonata for Cello and Piano no. 2 in D major, Op. 58
Song without Words in D major, Op. 109

Bossa Eyes (Emma Sidney)
EMMA SIDNEY
Emma's voice is sensuality incarnate: breathtakingly warm. Laid back jazz vocals float beautifully over bossa and samba rhythms. This unusual mix is inspired by the work of Brazilian artist Antonio Carlos Jobim. The result is an acoustically spacious album which seduces the senses with a mix of familiar and new material. Recording started in 2007. The project has since undergone amazing and loving transformations with the expertise of producer Paul Boath, musical director Todd Sidney and the team at Move Records. The raw inspiration of acoustic Brazil and the brilliant talents of the likes of Bob Sedergreen feature on this 12 track disc, which flows effortlessly between original and reinterpretated compositions. Composer Tom Jobim and his cohorts turned sex on the beach into sound (the 60s bossa nova) with a fusion of acoustic latin rhythms and laid back jazz improvisation. Picture a walk on the beach singing, the sea on a sunny summer afternoon while a sometimes unpredictable breeze plays over brown bodies and shining waves. This album was inspired by that love, that moment in time recast into the new century.

Below: Music for Low Flutes
PETER SHERIDAN, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute, sub-contrabass flute

A charming and rare recording of new chamber music showcasing the atmospheric sound of the lower members of the flute family. Low Flutes are mostly a 20th century invention, yet the concept of extending a particular instrumental sound dates back to the Renaissance period, when recorder consorts, with bass and alto recorders were used frequently in performances. In recent times, the popularity of low flutes grew with the renewed interest in the flute choir and flute quartet. Low flutes are basically members of the extended flute family, which play below the range of the standard orchestral C flute. These instruments include the alto flute in G (four notes below the C flute), the bass flute in C (one octave below C flute), the contrabass flute in C (two octaves below C flute, played in an upright standing position), and the sub-contra bass flute in C (three octaves below the C flute, played either sitting or standing). There are a few other low flutes not represented on this recording. These are the Pinschofon in C, bass flutes in F and G, and a extra large piped instrument known as the hyperbass flute. This unique recording features predominantly commissioned chamber music for low flutes that was composed to showcase the lyrical and colorful tonal qualities of these instruments, hence, expanding their small, yet growing repertoire.

Russian Rarities
LARRY SITSKY, piano
The works that appear on this 2-CD set are the result of research and performance into a particular era of Russian music. Although the musical distance between the Rubinstein Op.88 Variations and the other later Russian works is often vast, the chronological time is actually fairly short. Rubinstein represented the end of the romantic era in Russian piano music, but an era in which he personally chose to ignore the nationalistic school and the ethos of the Mighty Five group of composers, who wished for a truly patriotic school of composition based on Russian folk music; Rubinstein, instead, used European models for his own work, moreover models who represented the more classical aspects of European art (Mendelssohn is a fine example) rather than the more progressive composers such as Liszt. The musical upheavals in Russian music began less than a decade after Rubinstein's death. Were it not for the eventual Stalinist suppression, the group of composers represented on these CDs could well have led and surpassed their European counterparts in their sheer audacity and exuberance.

This CD represents new music from three distant areas - East Europe, North Asia and Australasia. For many decades Romanian, Korean and Australian musical voices have been mapping out their cultural identities in relative isolation. While the music contained in this recording might not branch too far from a European musical epicentre, they do demonstrate the bridges that have been built by the academic staff and postgraduate students at the School of Music-Conservatorium at Monash University, and their colleagues in other parts of Australia, Korea and Romania. This CD constitutes highlights the strengthened individual intersections that have been developed between musicians, composers and musicologists rather than the reinforcement of any globalised cultural world view.

Japanese Story - Film Soundtrack
Winner of Best Feature Film Score in the 2004 AGSC (APRA) Screen Music Awards!
Winner of Best Score in the 2003 AFI and Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards!
nomination for Best Score at the ARIAs in 2004 and nominated for Best Original Score in the 2003 IF Awards!

Elizabeth Drake knew as soon as she read the script of Japanese Story that this was a gift to the composer. Apart from the inherent strengths and fascination of the script itself, there was the opportunity for the inter-weaving and layering of elements of Japanese culture (Japanese instruments, modes, folksong and ritual) with western orchestral instruments, tonality and harmonic composition. The themes of cultural displacement, tragedy and transformation were as relevant to composition as they were to story-telling. Drake's haunting and award-winning score to this Australian feature film, with its memorable use of the Japanese folksong, Chinsagu No Hana is now available on this disc.

This collectable CD comes complete with two bonus tracks not featured in the film, plus an attractive and detailed 16 page booklet, with full movie synopsis, producer and composer notes, as well as stills from the location shoot in Western Australia. And, as has become the custom with Move soundtracks, there is a full widescreen version of the movie trailer included, compatible with both mac and PC computers.
