Marshall-Hall: Symphony in E flat
(FIRST EVER RECORDING)
George William Louis Marshall-Hall (1862-1915) was one of Australia's first significant composers. He dedicated his Symphony in E flat to his "friends and comrades under the Southern Cross", Streeton and Roberts. This is lively and passionate music, exuberant and rich in orchestral colours with strong thematic ideas. The Symphony was premiered in Melbourne in 1904, then played at Berlin (under Nikisch) and in London under Henry Wood. It had not been performed since 1907 until this recording was made. The CD also includes the Adagio Sostenuto from Marshall-Hall's Symphony in C minor.

Here are 23 songs, recorded between 1907 and 1914, selected from original records in the National Film and Sound Archive.Tracks include:

The taximeter car
The hobnailed boots that Father wore
Tickle me, Timothy!

The land where the women wear the trousers
I've found Kelly
When Father papered the parlour
St Kilda
Let's have a song upon the Gramophone

I never heard Father laugh so much before
Take me where there are no eyes about
She does like a little bit of Scotch
It's a grand old song

Wait till I'm as old as Father
The ragtime wedding
There must be something nice about the Isle of Man
There's life in the old dog yet
