The title evokes the intimacy, delicacy, refinement and above all the douceur (sweetness or sftness) of early 18th-century French chamber music. The court of Lousi XIV required impeccable taste in all things, from manners, dress, furniture and architecture to art and music, much of which 'good taste' probably arose from the King's personal preferences. There were three basic court musical establishments: the Musique de la Chapelle Royale, the Musique de la Grand Ecurie (for the King's large wind band) and the Musique de le Chambre - a small band of (usually) flute, violin, viol, lute, theorbo and harpsichord, which provided performances for various entertainments; the music was also heard in the growing number of salons in the homes of the aristocracy. "Barock" or the english/french version "baroque" is a German word which priginally meant "bizarre". It was not until early in the 20th century that it was used in Germany to describe music of Bach's time. This CD explores "Barock" music in the widest sense(s) of the word, ranging across four centuries; from Conceição's raw 17th century battle-piece, through traditional repertoire by Bach, Handel and Scarlatti; to jazz, blues, Beatles and Gershwin. Let's be clear - the baroque and classical works are played 'straight' and with the fabulous musicianship for which Elizabeth is renowned. Robert Lloyd is better known in dance circles worldwide than muscial ones - best known for his kinetic, brightly coloured scores which have been performed on four continents. The backbone of Lloyd's work is percussion as displayed by the three works on this CD. Vibrant young harpsichordist Jacqueline Ogeil showcases the very virtuosic side of the harpsichord featuring sparkling works by Scarlatti and elegant masterpieces by Bach, Handel and Rameau - and also the world premiere recording of Naji Hakim's 'Shasta' Suite. Ogeil studied with Hakim while in Paris. Like the recordings by Elizabeth Anderson this CD proves that the harpsichord is not old-fashioned or lacking in tonal colour but can be passionate and dramatic especially in performances as good as these.

The 'Little Organ Book' by J S Bach is in fact a major collection of 46 Chorale Preludes and includes many of his most well-known pieces, regularly found on 'compilation' albums, not so often in a complete set - indeed some of the pieces are very rarely heard, so we chose one of the less-often recorded ones as our audio sample.
Here Calvin Bowman provides an authorative performance on the fine Ahrend organ in the Robert Balckwood Hall, Monash University. The comprehensive booklet includes all of the texts on which the Chorale Preludes are based.

Rare early baroque works by Charles Dieupart (c1667-c1740), these 'Six Suittes de Clavecin' were stated on the first edition to be dedicated to 'Madame la Comtesse de Sandwich'. Dieupart was a French violinist, harpsichordist who spent the last 40 years of his life in England. Though known as Charles to his English contemporaries, his original name may have been François. It is possible that the dedicatee of these pieces was his harpsichord pupil for a time. The actual instrument for which the solo part is written is the 'flûte de voix' (voice flute) which is a recorder in D (a very rare instrument, set a third below the treble/alto recorder.
