Music for violin composed by EVE DUNCAN
As in European classical music, the violin can be heard alone, or in conjunction with other instruments - our catalogue has many fine examples. So here, the violin is heard both 'naked' (the composer's word), and with piano, pecussion, traditional Chinese instruments, and Australian didjeridu as well as in clusters in quartet and orchestra. The artists on this CD were a strong influence on the created works, several of which were composed especially for them and contain complex textures, forms, rhythms and pitch choices. The composer says that each work is a journey through a spiritual landscape. This is music of vitality, nervous energy and insatiable song - as is the instrument itself.

The works on this album were written in repsonse to specific locations - a reflection on the lived experience of three distinctly different places: a residential college at Melbourne University, the inner Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda, and a working farm and historic homestead situated on the Shoalhaven River in New South Wales. The composer brings the locations to life in music, all recorded on the Steinway piano in the recently built Iwaki Auditorium.

Baritone Blake Fischer is an award-winning singer from Australia, who with his accompanist Claire Cooper won the Song Recital Award in 1998. This is one of my favourite organ recordings, and features a concert of French and Italian concert pieces chosen to exploit all of the resources of this justly famed 3-manual instrument, built by 'Grandfather' George Fincham in the Church of St Mary's Star of the Sea, West Melbourne. FIncham is probably Australia's most acclaimed organ builder and this is a magnificent instrument, played with aplomb by Sergio de Pieri. The CD booklet contains a full history and specification.
