Whitty: Thirty-nine Pages
Paul Whitty writes in many modern styles and recently has taken to producing re-organisations of classic works; more than arrangements, Paul describes them as "interventions". The work Thirty-nine Pages is a re-reading of Cesar Franck's Violin Sonata in A major - whose score has thirty-nine pages - although the material is organized into 38 movements. Very approachable, the music is not quite minimalist but perhaps can be classified as part of the 'New Simplicity" school of post-modernist work - in other words, it's listener-friendly. Superbly performed by artists who have built fine reputations in the world of new music.

White Dawn - Songs and Soundscapes by David Lumsdaine (2CD)
Lesley-Jane Rogers (soprano); John Turner (recorder);
Peter Lawson (piano); Gemini, directed by Martyn Brabbins

David Lumsdaine's work is mostly rooted in Australia where he was born though he now lives in the UK. This unique and intriguing set includes pieces for a variety of instruments (not all are vocal) a number of which relate to the Australian landscape and the sounds of its unique wildlife - which are also captured in live 'outback' recordings demonstrating the voices of the birds and creatures which inspired some of the works.
The music itself is most approachable and well written. Definitely an important addition to the modern music repertoire.

GEORGE ROCHBERG: Violin Sonata - Peter Sheppard Skaerved and Aaron Shorr
Caprice Variations - Peter Sheppard Skaerved (solo violin
An immense and magnificent set of variations by American composer George Rochberg, not just, as the title may suggest, on Paganini's famous 24th Caprice, but incorporating styles and forms "borrowed" from many other ocmposers, such as Mahler, Brahms, Busoni, Schubert and Beethoven! The work is played on the renowned "Habeneck" Stradivarius violin of 1734. Violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved is a virtuoso of the first order and a regular Metier recording artist. David Dubery: Songs and Chamber Music
Adrienne Murray (mezzo-soprano), John Turner (Recorder), Peter Dixon (cello), Richard Simpson (oboe), Richard Williamson (viola), Graham Salvage (bassoon), Craig Ogden (guitar), Paul Janes and David Dubery (piano)
David Dubery is a fine example of a modern composer refusing to be boxed in by boundaries, and like a growing number of his contemporaries, has developed a thoroughly individual, yet traditionally tonal and lyrical, style. Dubery's special gift for enchantingly beautiful melodies is well demonstrated here as is the wide range of impressionist, abstract and quasi-autobiographical works, all of which are an absolute joy.

This recording was kindly supported by the Manchester Musical Heritage Trust
