Catalogue Irraisone
In 1998 leading contemporary British composer Christopher Fox began work on a new commission, a piece that was to be 'evening-long, and not a concert'. The result was the quasi-dramatic 'instalation piece' Everything You Need to Know - a body of musical material which can be deployed in many different ways. Fox realized that the work needed a guide - a parallel version of the same ideas in a different form, rather like the 'catalogue raisoné' at an art exhibition. Thus was born a series of pieces for solo voice, as recorded here for the first time under the supervision of the composer and with his appearance as narrator. The sections are based on a series of multiligual texts from various sources including Virgil, Dante, tourist guides and essays. The 'catalogue' is about ideas, remembrance and the possibility of improbable connections. In itself as a sound work it is absolutely and positively unique.

Performers: Christopher Fox (speaker), Julia Doyle and Juliet Fraser (sopranos), Jimmy Holliday (bass), Tom Williams (Counter-tenor), James Weeks (speaker, director)

Trajectories - Music by David Gorton
David Gorton is a very highly respected British composer whose music is firmly modernist - very difficult to play, but which is also very approachable and accessible. Here Neil Heyde provides a stunning performance of the Cello Sonata and a second version, given a very different interpretation in a live recital. We have the two tiny but intense Caprices for solo violin, a fine work for Piano Trio and the String Quartet Trajectories, a modern model for that genre. All are first recordings, produced and supervised by the composer. All at mid-price.

Tracks:
Sonata for Solo Cello
Neil Heyde
String Quartet: Trajectories
Kreutzer Quartet
Melting Forms
Roderick Chadwick (piano), Peter Sheppard Skærved (violin), Neil Heyde (cello)

Music of 9/11, volume 1
Made after visits to all the crash sites of September 1, 2001 and in collaboration with senior officials of the 9/11 Commission, this CD is a musical document of the events and emotions of that day, remarkably unsentimental but deeply moving. Requiem 77 is a solo cello work interlaced with the voices of air traffic controllers documenting the loss of flight 77 into the Pentagon; Eighteen Minutes documents the interval between the two WTC attacks and Angels and Fireflies is a hauntingly beautiful piece inspired by seeing clouds of fireflies hovering over the Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania. Issued in memory for all those afflicted, on that day and since.

David Heyes & Dan Styffe (double basses), New World Ensemble

Mystery Lights/Nightflower
CLIVE BELL is Britain’s leading player of the Japanese shakuhachi, and a founder member of Jah Wobble’s Deep Space project. DAVID ROSS was drummer for the instrumental combo Kenny Process Team. But none of this would prepare you for Mystery Lights, their first duo recording. This is a spacious, intimate music, full of colour and melody, exploratory but highly accessible. Many instruments, both acoustic and electronic, familiar and unfamiliar, weave a spell hard to resist. This album was made in collaboration with Walter & Donald the budgerigars. Recorded live at "The Earl of Kilgorlin". CD includes a video playable on any PC.

“This is a lovely record. Intimate and unassuming, it sounds like nothing else and imparts a warmth that deepens with each listen. It's music to furnish the secluded corners and secret recesses of the mind, catering from quiet times.” – Julian Cowley (The Wire)

Macroscopia
This CD features some of the most distinctive personalities in the contemporary New York scene inclduing the legendary Daniel Carter (sax, trumpet) who has been a leading light in the avant-garde since the early 70s and has featured on well over 100 recordings.
Claire DeBrunner is an accomplished bassoonist with a classical as well as jazz training, and is one of very few musicians to play the bassoon in improvisational music.
Ken Silverman plays guitar and hand percussion, and bassist Tom Zlabinger is an everpresent in the free jazz worlds of New York and Vienna.
On this album the quartet aim to create a freely improvised chamber-music-like sound without drums, allowing for total rhythmic flexibility and sonic complexity. Although the music can become intense its general tendency is towards the delicate, subtle and intimate. A warm sound for warm evenings.

Borderlands
JONATHAN LORENTZ (sax) with John Menegon (bass), David Calarco (drums)
Featuring Suzanne Katorski and Teri Roiger (vocals)
Borderlands is the name of the Shawn Snow painting that graces the cover of this album. Snow’s art inspired the four-part theme and variations that for the album’s framework. The title also describes the artistic realm in which Jonathan Lorentz finds himself. This is “borderlands” as unsafe, unfamiliar territory, where the only things more vague than the demarcations are the rules. It also represents literal geography: Lorentz is a veteran of the Manhattan scene (with a Ph.D. in jazz studies from NYU), but now based in northeast Upstate New York. Bringing bassist John Menegon and drummer David 'Scorch' Calarco together to form the Trio has allowed JL to experiment, compose and develop his exceptional talents. Jonathan Lorentz is the new face of New York club jazz, whether in the city or out in the Borderlands.
TRACKS: Borderlands(+ parts 2,3 and 4); Sounds Like; Hurmm...
Trane Fare; Drive Down; Stir; He's the Budz; The Sign;
You Snooze You Lose Blues; Drums Play; Motion Detector; Addiction

Beethoven Explored, volume 5
The Metier Re-appraisal series continues, presenting Beethoven's Violin Sonatas in their musical and social context by including a little known work by one of Beethoven's mentors, pupils or close associates. Here with the three Op. 12 sonatas, we have the B flat sonata by Andreas Romberg who worked closely with Bethoven for a while and whose sonata is by measure very simple yet effective. While still showing classical restraint and form more than the new Romanticism of Beethoven, it is expressionist in that it incoporates Scottish traditional tunes, hence its nickname 'Scottische'. This series of new recordings (often premieres of the non-Beethoven works) is offered at midprice.

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Sonata for Piano and Violin in D, Op. 12/1
Sonata for Piano and Violin in A, Op. 12/2
Sonata for Piano and Violin in E flat, Op. 12/3
Andreas Romberg:
Sonata for Piano and Violin in B flat, Op. 9/2
