Eric Craven: Piano Sonatas 7,8 & 9
MARY DULLEA (piano)

2 discs for the price of 1
If any composer has deliberately hidden his light under a bushel, it's Eric Craven. The Manchester based composer has kept himself out of the limelight until recently with the publication of his major work SET for piano (msv 28525 - also published by Brandon Music), His "non-prescriptive" compositional technique is not like any system and its effectiveness is amply displayed by Mary Dullea who has produced these brilliant realisations and performances, which result in music thoroughly new but also attractive, dynamic and always engaging. Craven deserves to be feted as one of the most individual and creative composers of the day and this recording should go at least some way to achieving that goal.

Disc 1: Sonatas 7 & 9. Disc B: Sonata 8

Mississipi Hornpipes: Michael Finnissy's music for violin and piano
DARRAGH MORGAN & MARY DULLEA

Finnissy's work is never easy - he has a reputation for being at the difficult end of the New Complexity school - but that does no justice to the amazing depth of inspiration, from literary, folksong, cultural and many other sources, and the skill and virtuosity required of the performers. At Metier, the fact that we consider Michael Finnissy to be among the best of the best of today's composers is evidenced in that this is our 11th album devoted to his work. Here we have his complete (to date) music for violin and piano, demonstrating not only the above characteristics but also in several works his wry, sardonic sense of humour and willngness not to be to serious even in serious music - witness the wild miniature 'Jive' and also 'Molly House' - a startling and irrerepressible 'kit' of conventionally scored sections together with less conventional stuff including several unpitched 'instruments'.

David Dubery: Observations
OBSERVATIONS: 17 SONGS AND A STRING QUARTET

JAMES GILCHRIST (tenor); ADRIENNE MURRAY (mezzo-soprano);
MICHAEL COX (flute); DAVID DUBERY (piano); CAVALERI QUARTET

The second album of music by David Dubery includes a very fine quartet based on Spanish inspiration and locations, which has been attracting much praise. Also two of Britain's foremost singers present a range of songs on texts by Douglas Gibson, William Shakespeare and Walter de la Mare, many with an obbligato flute line too. Dubery's firm attachment to the lyrical post-romantic style is ideal for these texts once again showing that new music can be superbly crafted, meaningful and enjoyable in relatively traditional form. This is music which will stay in fashion and be listened to 100 years from now.

Three Songs to poems by Douglas Gibson

Orfordness - Music by David Gorton
ORFORDNESS: music by David Gorton
ZUBIN KANGA (piano); NEIL HEYDE (cello); CHRISTOPHER REDGATE (oboe); MILTON MERMIKIDES (electronics); KREUTZER QUARTET

David Gorton, Head of Research Studies at the Royal Academy of Music, is a composer unafraid to use 'straight' instrumentation, electronics and also collage techniques to express himself. This means that a program of only four works, all quite extended, is full of variation; from the Sonata for Cello with electronics, deep in the contemporary mainstream, to the eerie depiction of Orfordness in England, nature reserve and former secret weapons establishment, involving solo piano coupled with tapes from the USAF recording a UFO encounter in the vicinity. Gorton's music may be modern but it is never abstract, always communicating about people and places.

A sequel to Gorton's excellent 'Trajectories' (MSVCD92104) this album has four extended works each very different, from the eerily descriptive 'Orfordness' (piano solo with taped USAF messages about a UFO sighting) to the 2nd Cello Sonata, the oboe showpiece 'Austerity Measures II' and another location-based work 'Fosdyke Wash'. Top soloists include Christopher Redgate, Neil Heyde and the Kreutzer Quartet and we welcome exciting Australian pianist Zubin Kanga.

CD program: ORFORDNESS(piano)
AUSTERITY MEASURES II (oboe, string quartet)
FOSDYKE WASH (piano, string quartet)
2nd SONATA FOR CELLO (cello, electronics)

Sea to the West - contemporary music for voice
ELIZABETH HILLARD (soprano) B/B>
This collection of new works for voice by British and Irish composers demonstrates the wide range of styles and structures available even within the genre of solo vocal music and also gives an opportunity to hear the exquisite and virtuosic singing of Elizabeth Hilliard. In some works she is accompanied by discreet electronic sounds and by overdubbing her voice. This album is a fine way to explore new vocal music which is both exploratory and individualistic but also attractive and sensuous.

Isn't This a Time: American Music for Clarinet
Ian Mitchell is without doubt one of the leading exponents of contemporary music for clarinet, both as soloist and as chamber and orchestral player. This album presents works by American composers (including the jazz legend Bill Smith in his alter ego of art-music composer) which have very individual styles and outlooks, presenting many challenges for the performer.
The works demonstrate a strong personal creativity and all are quite unusual – some using narration alongside the music and others building on existing works such as Peter Warlock’s “Sleep”. Ian Mitchell plays a variety of instruments including the Double Clarinet - and percussion, piano and voice.
CD program:
William O. Smith: Reflection; Epitaphs
Peter Warlock / Barney Childs: Sleep and then Going On
Eric Mandat: Etude for Barney
Christian Wolff: For One, Two or Three People; Isn't This a Time; Dark as a Dungeon
Merle Travis: Dark as a Dungeon

Hohler Fels - New Music for Flute
KARIN DE FLEYT (flutes) with
PETER MERCKX (clarinets), JAKOB FICHERT (piano),
RNCM WIND ORCHESTRA conducted by MARK HERON
The title track of this album is named after the celebrated Hohle Fels caves in Germany, in which have been found the oldest flutes ever discovered. Paul Goodey's Concerto is a modern classic for orchestra and no less than four flutes. Also here we have a complex work for two flutes and two clarinets and a typically 'out-of-the-box' piece by Christopher Fox for solo alto flute, giving us a well balanced program of new music in which Karin de Fleyt can demonstrate her virtuosity in both traditional and advanced performance techniques.

Delightful (all composed in the past four years), these piano trios by four leading Irish composers are modern enough in style to provide ever-interesting sounds, but without becoming too challenging - in fact they represent the best contemporary approach to often tuneful and lyrical compositions and in places touches of jazz, and exotic rhythms. Superbly played, as ever, by the astounding Fidelio Trio.

<B> AYLISH KERRIGAN (mezzo-soprano) and DEARBHLA COLLINS (piano) perform contemporary vocal music from Ireland.<BR><BR>Sometimes wrongly dismissed as a land only of ancient folk tunes and soggy ballads, Ireland is surprising many with the resurgence of a host of talented composers and performers in the contemporary music arena. SIx composers represented here show the amazing variety and diversity of recent compositions. Mezzo-soprano Aylish Kerrigan is famed for her one-woman shows and performance of both traditional Irish music and also German theatre music, and she is highly active in the world of contemporary art-song, as demonstrated here with her longstanding partner Dearbhla Collins.

Signs of Occupation
SIGNS OF OCCUPATION : music by JAMES WEEKS
PLUS-MINUS ENSEMBLE
This is new music in every sense - avant-garde, yet essentially straightforward - music pared to its core, not minimalism but avoiding dense and detailed structures. The music has no ostentatious virtuosity but simple, ordinary sounds, mixed and repeated in evolving combinations, and in different ways in each piece, from the loop-building in Looping Busker Music, to the detuned strings of the solo guitar in Digger.
Several of today's foremost instrumentalists of the new music scene appear (see track list below).

Schoenberg and Bodley: Vocal works
AYLISH KERRIGAN (mezzo-soprano); DEARBHLA COLLINS (piano)

Two major cycles, extensive in duration and exceptionally powerful. Arnold Schoenberg's Opus 15 ( Das Buch der hängenden Gärten ) is a seminal, revolutionary work, composed in 1908-9 and which is considered by many to be the first truly modernist composition - certainly in vocal music. Today it still sounds exploratory and adventurous. Its 15 sections are all settings of poems by Stefan George.

In some ways, the song cycle 'A Girl' by Seoírse Bodley is a modern equivalent, though in no way does it lack in complete originality. It was commissioned by Radio Telefis Eireann and premiered in 1978; its tragic story of a girl exiled from society was not uncommon in Ireland until very recently (and of course is still prevalent in many countries. Aylish Kerrigan is a specialist in contemporary vocal music and gives a stunning performance, wonderfully partnered by Dearbhla Collins.

Rhona Clarke - A Different Game
THE FIDELIO TRIO

Reviewing MSV 28556, which contained Rhona Clarke's Second piano trio, one critic expressed the desire to hear much more of this exceptional composer's work, and we are delighted to present this new disc adding the 3rd and 4th trios to No. 2 together wth three works played by members of the Fidelio Trio. Clarke's original and bewitching style is evident in every work as it is also in her vocal piece "....smiling like that..." (on MSV 28558).

The Fidelio Trio give another top-rank performance demonstrating why their reputation as one of the world's foremost ensembles continues to grow. Piano Trio No. 2

Betty Roe is a phenomenon in her native Britain; composer of many works including two operas and famed for her stage work, her first love is the art-song of which she has composed over 100. This recital shows the breadth of her work and skill in setting words of both serious works (Magnificat, Autumn's Legacy, etc.) and also the comic and witty (Scooting, Diva's Lament). A fine 'cast' of soloists makes this a wonderfully entertaining and inspirational recital.
