Voix Voilees
Marilyn Nonken is without doubt one of the leading exponents of moern piano music, and also Director of Piano Studies at New York University's Steinhardt School. She has a particular affinity with the spectral school of music, as exemplified in her previous CD of the works of Tristan Murail (92097) - Metier's best seller. This sequel features a major (half-hour-long) work by another of the founding generation of spectral music, Hugues Dufourt, and awesome pieces by young American composer Joshua Fineberg.
As part of our planned programmes of musical information we will soon have available a video in which Marilyn Nonken talks about the making of this CD and about spectral music.

Eric Craven: Set for Piano (CD)
Performed by MARY DULLEA
In the search for new techniques and 'expanding the boundaries' often composers can become so wrapped up in technique that the music as an art form is lost. Here is a composer whose vision has been to create a new form of composition (which he simply calls "non-prescriptive") in which the performer has varying degrees of freedom to manipulate choice around a set core. Related to other techniques of course, it remains a new and distinct method which can allow, even within the least 'set' pieces, the music to remain approachable, often very beautiful and expressive. "Set" has twelve sections, and the degree of prescription increases as each piece follows.

Craven: Set for Piano - TWELVE (alternative version)
This alternative version of TWELVE, the final movement of Eric Craven's 'Set for Piano' was recorded by Mary Dullea at the same time as the album. Craven's music employs 'non-prescriptive' compositional techniques allowing the performer varying degrees of interpretation - in the case of TWELVE, this is particularly true: this free download mp3 can be compared with the version on the album (Metier MSV28525) MORE INFO HERE

Christopher Fox: Natural Science
TRIO SCORDATURA: Alfrun Schmid, vocal/violin; Elisabeth Smalt, viola; Bob Gilmore, vocal/keyboards; with Scott Mc Laughlin, electric guitar

These works demonstrate yet another peak in the creativity of Christopher Fox; disarmingly simple, they demonstrate his uncanny ability to create music from the most unlikely inspirations such as the superb poetry of ian Duhig; travels through a cityscape, or the calculations of planetary orbits; also these pieces make use of tunings other than the 'normal' equal temperament we are familar with thus creating an other-wordly (yet firmly rooted in daily life) soundstage.

Thesaurus of Violinistic Fiendishness
PETER SHEPPARD SKÆRVED (solo violin)
The composer Paul Pellay describes this immense and absorbing work as 'a compositional diary of the two years it took to write' and says that a number of his preoccupations became part of its fabric - from autobiographical elements, to his interest in abstract constructions, to the art of Goya and the poetry of Ungaretti, political concerns and the odd 'nod' in the direction of other composers he admires. The 'fiendishness' of the title should not dissuade potential customers - it is far more approachable music than much other virtuoso solo violin music but fiendish certainly in its virtuosity and concept.

John Ramsay: String Quartets 1-4 (2CD for price of 1)
Performed by THE FITZWILLIAM STRING QUARTET

John Ramsay is a professor of geology by profession but also a very serious composer, of both chamber and orchestral works. His style is chiefly tonal though he does utilise serial techniques on occasion. The four string quartets are perfect examples of the best of 'post-modernist' music, employing no artificial boundaries, but being pure self expression using the most appropriate musical forms. They are to some degree programmatic and thus Romantic in idiom too and thoroughly deserve a place in the chamber music repertoire. The quartets (score and parts) are to be published by Brandon Music in early 2012.

tracks:
String Quartet No. 1 in D minor
String Quartet No. 2 in E minor ("Shackleton")
String Quartet No. 3 in C major

Michael Finnissy: Unknown Ground
Performed by Richard Jackson (baritone) andNew Music Players
Music by Michael Finnissy, all first recordings of major works. The album takes its name from the song cycle in which Finnissy has set words, arranged by himself, from various individuals relating their personal experiences living in fear of AIDS - the 'Unknown Ground', superbly sung by Richard Jackson (published by Oxford University Press). The work is accompanied by two chamber pieces the first of which relates to Kant's work of the same name. Both are much more approachable than Finnissy's reputation for 'hard' music might suggest: smooth textures, ethereal passages and altogether work which is meant to reach deep into the psyche. An excellent introduction to the compositions of one of Britain's most respected modern composers.

Grieg and Finnssy Piano Quintets
Metier is very proud to introduce the first recording of Edvard Grieg's unfinished Piano Quintet, as completed masterfully by Michael Finnissy. Keeping closely within the bounds of the musical language known to Grieg, this new completion produces a 27-minute single-movement work of extreme quality. The second work on the CD takes Grieg's Quintet as its starting point and develops it gradually, adding more and more contemporary and free harmonies and melodic lines, as a modern-day 'reflection' on the original Quintet.

The internationally renowned Kreutzer Quartet again produce a masterful performance with pianist Roderick Chadwick.

A Clockwork Operetta
Music by Kevin Malone ranging from the ethereal and haunting 'Angels and Fireflies' in version for recorder and orchestra, to the new and eclectic chamber work American Terpsichore, the album centers around the 'pop' songs written by Anthony Burgess for the original film script of A Clockwork Orange, which was rejected by director Stanley Kubrick in favor of his own less agressive screenplay. A wild cabaret setting in which the songs have been arranged into five scenes, acrobatically performed by leading New York actress and singer Emily Howard..
